Infrastructures of Historical Knowledge Production

The field of global history is developing at a great pace since the end of the Cold War. Especially since the Twentieth Annual Conference of the World Historical Association that took place at the Global History Center of Capital Normal University in Beijing in 2011 global and world history received much attention and institutional support. While Capital Normal University in Beijing had established the first global history research center in 2004, other universities followed suit. Research centers that were founded in the past years are, among others, the Institute of Global History 全球史研究院 at Beijing Foreign Studies University (founded 2014) and the Institute of Global History and Transnational History 全球史与跨国史研究院 at Shandong University 山东大学 (2016). In addition, numerous academic journals in the field have been published, with Global History Review 全球史评论 being the most prominent. Founded by the Global History Center 全球史研究中心 at Capital Normal University 首都师范大学 in 2008, this journal has published 18 volumes contributing to the introduction, translation, and writing of global history.

In the following, we provide an introduction to the most important research centers in order to provide an overview of the contemporary infrastructure of global historical knowledge production in the People’s Republic of China and Taiwan.
